Reading Reviews with Nat - The Land of Stories, The Wishing Spell

Welcome to Nat's Book Nook. We've been reading for our library's summer reading program. It's a great program with prizes every 10 books, and a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer if you read 40 books. While some kids go for quantity, racking up over a hundred titles, Nat has decided to go for substance, reading mostly chapter books, some as many as 450 pages long, while still filling out her 40. She just finished this book and wanted to share.

Hi, I'm Natalie, and I am almost 9 years old. I found this book at the store and just knew I had to read it. Now I can't wait for the next one to come out!

The Land of Stories, The Wishing Spell is about a pair of boy and girl twins named Alex and Conner. In the beginning of the book they are just normal kids who's grandma gives them her old book, "The Land of Stories" for their 12th birthday after their father dies in a car crash. The first night they have it, they realize it wasn't your average book. While wishing with all her heart to travel inside the book they accidentally activate it and fall into the land of stories. And that's how it all begins.

In order to return home, the twins must assemble items from the land of stories to complete the wishing spell. The list is long and given to them in the form of riddles, ensuring their adventure will be long and full of danger. The list includes: "glass that housed a lonely soul up 'til midnight's final toll, a saber from the deepest sea meant for a groom's mortality, the bark of a basket held in fright while running from a bark with bite, a stony crown that's made to share found deep within a savage lair, a needle that pierced the lovely skin of a princess with beauty found within, a wavy lock of golden rope that once was freedom's only hope, glittering jewels who's value increased after preserving the false deceased, and teardrops of a maiden fairy feeling neither magical nor merry."

The twins have to fight goblins, trolls, witches, a big bad wolf pack and the evil queen for possession of the items and their chance to make it home. Along the way they discover that the glass that housed a lonely soul was Cinderella's glass slipper and they find it and the other items, until there is only one left: the saber from the deepest sea.

When all is done, the twins have had a great adventure, met many princesses turned queens, and discovered secrets about some people very close to them!

I give this book 5 fairy's and think everyone who likes to read should pick it up to read right now!

  1. Very nicely done! I'm glad you enjoyed "The Wishing Spell". The 2nd book, "The Enchantress Returns", has been out for a year and is amazing! The 3rd book, "A Grimm Warning", will be released on July 8th, this year. I can't wait to read #3!

    1. Nat is eagerly awaiting the next release, as the first two are her "all-time favorite books ever." Colfer has an excerpt from the third in the series available on the book'd website (www.thelandofstories.com) which I believe she has read a dozen times already!
